Which Maileg Mouse Should I Buy First? A Beginner’s Guide

There is something particularly lovely about choosing a first Maileg mouse.

Perhaps it begins with a mouse sleeping in a matchbox, or a Little Sister tucked inside a tiny suitcase. Often, one small character is all it takes — and slowly, a little world begins to grow around it.

For those discovering Maileg for the first time, the choice can feel surprisingly large. Little Sister or Big Sister? A baby mouse? 

And do you need a house to begin? Not at all.

We think Maileg is at its loveliest when a collection grows slowly.

A Sister or Brother Is a Lovely Place to Begin

For a first Maileg character, we often find ourselves returning to the sisters and brothers.

Big Sister and Big Brother are particularly easy to build a collection around. They are a lovely size for little hands to dress and play with, and there is plenty of room for the collection to grow around them.

A bed can come later. Perhaps a chair, a change of clothes, or a little sibling after that.

There is no need to decide what the whole collection will look like from the beginning.

What About Little Sister & Little Brother?

For children drawn to the smallest things, Little Sister and Little Brother have a charm of their own.

They slip easily into a pocket, a little bag or a suitcase and feel made for adventures away from home.

We especially love them paired with something simple — a matchbox to sleep in or a little suitcase to travel with.

Sometimes, that is all a story needs.

And the Baby Mice?

Baby mice are especially sweet for children who naturally gravitate towards caring play — tiny beds, blankets, cradles and prams.

As a first and only mouse, we would usually choose an older sister or brother. But for a child who spends her days tucking dolls into bed and pushing a pram through the house, a Baby Mouse might be exactly the right beginning.

The best first mouse is often the one that already feels familiar to the way a child plays.

Do I Need a Maileg Mouse House?

Not at all.

A matchbox becomes a bed.
A small basket becomes a room.
A suitcase becomes a house for the afternoon.

Children are usually much better at imagining these things than we are.

A Mouse House is a beautiful addition when the time feels right, but beginning with less often leaves more room for imagination.

The same goes for furniture. A bed, a chair or a little table is plenty to begin with.
